Exquisite and extremely delicate wax dolls are highly admired among dollhouse lovers. These magnificently poured idols have real hair and eyelashes, neatly inserted while molding. From a beautiful damsel to innocent babies, wax dolls have idolized all stages of life.
Wax dolls are sensibly crafted to withstand any room temperature. In fact earlier wax dolls were sealed with warranty to bear all climates. Though if exposed to direct sunlight or fire, they tend to chip off, fade or lean to one side. For this, placing wax dolls near widow or mantelpiece is a strict no-no. Another interesting subsidiary of wax doll is wax over composition doll. They are relatively inexpensive but unfortunately more fragile than poured ones. Those survived from the past have shriveled and cracked limbs. Most often constant contraction/ expansion of surface lead to this breakage.
Wax over composition dolls are more charming and realistic, flaunting radiant glass eyes and heart stealing dazzling smile. Some wax dolls have movable eyes operated through a cord attached in body. Technique of production is simple. Paper-Mache heads are repeatedly polished with thin layers of wax to bring a softer, natural and lustrous radiance. Furthermore, sharply defined features add a warm glow to the whole appearance. Exclusivity of wax dolls lies in the way it is molded and touched-up.
Evolved in Germany, wax doll soon transcended all regional barriers. It was during Victorian era when wax dolls hogged all the limelight and were revered worldwide. Some of the surviving relics from this period carry the names of their makers.
